Upon rebuilding my distributor it took a while to free up the lube cap. The spring, little “phenolic block” and inside of the cap was a solid one piece dried block of lubricant. Got it all freed up and cleaned up. What type of lubricant/grease is used?

Wheel bearing grease works fine. I used the white lithium wheel bearing grease in mine.

I use whatever chassis or bearing grease I have around. The blue stuff, the red stuff, the brown stuff, the white stuff. It’s more important that there is grease there then what kind of grease

The cup grease which was called for these grease caps was more wax-like (thicker if you will) than bearing grease. This is an important trait for this application since thinner grease can leak out around the cup seal as you tighten it.
I am not suggesting that bearing grease won't work, I am just passing on a little Cup Grease history.

I thnk the cup grease that was originally used was more akin to the high metallic soap ball bearing grease, the so called fibrous grease. That stuff was a little more wax like and if you put a little between two fingers and then seperated the fingers, you could see the "fibrose" strands from the sticky grease. No actual fibers mind you, just sticky grease threads. I have some of that stuff that I use on front axle ball bearings.

Thanks for all of the information. My first thought is that it was sticky wheel bearing “like” grease.
I have a tube that I use on my F**ds and I’ll use it on this dizzy.

52 Carl Seems to me like Marathon offered a can of grease that maybe said cup grease right on it,our huge Marathon refinery probably made it. Would say best in the long run on it. Showed the runner right on it.
