I’m new to this, but pretty sure this is suppose to have a cover. Please check out the photos! Best I can tell, it’s the shift control shaft on the steering rod/column. It goes on a ‘49 Chevy PU. I don’t see it listed in the parts of some of the catalogs I’ve got, unless of course I’m looking for the wrong thing since I’m not sure the name of it! Any idea where I can get one??
Yes, that definitely should have a cover on it. Without it, the shifter shaft is unsupported (bearings at top and bottom) and shifting may not even work correctly. You may have trouble finding just the cover, but might be able to come up with a complete shift box.
Try the swap meet here, or maybe try Jim Carter. I believe they offer rebuilding service for the shifters and may have a cover available or a complete used one.

Give Jim Carter a call. They may still be able to help you out if they have a cover laying around. They'll probably want you to ship them your incomplete box to them first if they do.
Also post an ad in the Swap Meet. Another Bolter may have a spare.

I second posting an add in the Swap Meet Parts Wanted forum. There are plenty of parts to be had if you just ask.
