The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area General Truck Talk Backer Plate

When I redid the brakes on my 52 half ton I found the backer plate adjustment hole plug was missing on two of the wheels. The remaining two plugs were metal that clipped into the holes. Am I correct to assume these are the original style? Are they available today? I replaced all with rubber.

Pretty neat. I've never seen metal plugs on any old car and that's all I've ever owned.

I wonder if they originally had a thin rubber seal bonded to them?

From what I could gather here Group 5.188 - Cover is the Master parts Catalog listing for these. See snapshots below for more details. Your metal ones were definitely original equipment.

A web search for GM# 475516 provided links for sales listings (none mine) in eBay for NOS or OER items and reproductions available from Chevs of the 40's (https://www.chevsofthe40s.com/detail/6298/Chevrolet_Brake_Adjuster_Hole_Plugs_Original_Metal.html)

Your call if you want to use the rubber ones you already have or if you want something period correct???

My 70's and 80's GM trucks had the steel plugs. When I was in my local chain parts store and asked for rubber brake adjustment plugs they didn't have a clue, didn't even have any hanging on the Dorman peg display.

I find that using the first "FREE" source link Old Online Chevy Manuals is often my first stop when trying to search for part identification, pictures, part numbers and so on for most trucks in our community.

Once you have an original part number, it is usually (not always) easy to do further web searchs to help you find sources both old and new.

Is saved as one of my "favorites" and get used frequently.

Otto they used to all be just metal,I remember when they showed up on the dorman rack.

Surprisingly, my '58 1 ton had those as well. Popped them off and stashed them somewhere
