Yeah went to the yard and the guy had some bud style wheels and a 2 speed axle on a bus that would bolt right up but he wants me to buy the whole bus for like 850 bucks and I still have to get it out. The guy tried saying he would give me a deal with the 850 because scrap is lower than it was in the summer. And I just told him I would think on it because the bus has no motor or grill and only weighs like 7k max so like 400 bucks max the way scrap is going. But I went to another yard I found and the guy has a bunch of old stuff although mainly Dayton's.
At the yard I did find a 2 speed axle with Dayton's and hydraulic brakes(2 speed and hydraulic brakes are my requirements for this) and the whole yard was under water at some point but they guy is nice and said I can take it apart before buying it and come out during the day to look through the rest of his stuff because I only went through like maybe 4 acres out of 60 and he has a bunch of old stuff in there. One thing I have a question about though is if I bought the axle and I am going to look for a part number as well to do some research, how hard are Dayton's to deal with and would someone like me be able to work with Dayton's on something like this and is there anything I should know about Dayton's. I do know that when you take them off you need to loosen the nuts and then jack the wheel up and break it loose to avoid sending the pucks flying but I have read stuff about them wobbling when installed wrong. What would be the best way to stop that. If I need to make a separate post I will.

I just junked a 2-speed Eaton (electric shift) 6-lug Budd rear that was on a low mileage fire truck chassis three weeks ago (think it was rated at 18K)...shipping from Maryland would be a killer.
There are millions of trucks out there running Dayton's, so there can't be that many issues...go talk to your local big truck tire shop for tip on mounting/installing them.

As suggested, moved this part of a discussion from Big Bolts ( about patching ) to here (Driveline).
Have at it boys.

I found the numbers on those rears the guy had 2 of the same ones and one isn't seized but had some water the other one didn't have the axle shafts and was in a position where there wouldn't be water and I was wondering if anyone could identify these
The bottom numbers are hard to read, could you wire brush and rub with talc, etc to help out? Usually the high number is stamped. Can always turn by hand and count!

I also found another guy with axles that I know would be good but the problem is the front axle springs are 1 in off of mine how hard would it be to move mine to match up with his

Here is a blown-up/rotated crop shot of the stamped numbers that may help decide what this unit is.

Ok so that would be a usable axle for my truck then but I think I may go with something else. I found a guy with a 82 c70 that he is parting out and is selling axles for way less than what the guy at the junkyard is asking for and it would mean I get newer brakes axles and also I would be getting a full set that the suspension matches up better and only requires some welding on the front hangers and I am not throwing some random front end I found at a junkyard under there that doesn't line up on a lot of it.
Thoughts? I know it's kind of a lot but this is just a big step in this project

Well, if those axles bolt up, sounds like a good idea. Might want to see if the brake drums have any ‘meat’ left if possible. What is the wheel bolt pattern of the axles?

If I went and got the axles from that c70 they are 22.5 Daytons(I think 6 spoke) and disk brakes and I can actually get everything for the brakes too.
I am really leaning towards this solution even though I would be a little wider on the front axle but I will still be inside the fender and I would probably have to weld in new hangers up front because my leafs are 2.5in and his are 3in wide.
And I should be able to hook up the steering pretty easily too I would hope Chevy kept them fairly standard?

Well I got the axles from the guy I wasn't able to get the front springs because we were under a bit of a time crunch and couldn't get to where we could cut them out so just cut the u-bolts and now I need to figure out brakes on this but I think we were definitely pushing the limits of my van with 4 people and a bunch of tools and equipment and probably not gonna do that again before I get bags
