OK I HAVE A 53 CHEVY WITH THE ORIGINAL REAR AXLE. I STILL HAVE THE 4/11 GEARS AND WOULD LIKE TO GET SOMETHING SMALLER. I HEARD THAT LIKE THE 54 CHEVYS WITH THE AUTOMATIC TRANNY HAVE LOWER GEARS. IS THIS TRUE? IF SO WOULD THIS BE A GOOD SWAP. CAUSE I WOULD STILL HAVE THE TORQUE TUBE. ANY SUGGESTIONS PLEASE HELP ME OUT. THANKS

Juggman, Try running a few searches here in the Engine and Driveline shop. This topic has been written about many, many times.. There is a lot of good info here...

If you still have questions, post them and someone will help you..

I don't think the automatic was geared differently. You either have to change the rear end to an open driveline or get the $400 gear set from Patricks.

You know, I hadn`t thought to look at the torque-tube rear ends I have that came out of the hydromatic trucks.I guess it is time to pull a cover and find out smile

The 1954 truck rearend is 3.90:1 on the 3100 trucks (1/2 ton).

The '54 Sedan Delivery had a stock 3.7:1 rearend and this vehicle with a Powerglide transmission had a 3.55:1 rearend. If the Powerglide transmission is longer than the manual transmission, then the length of the torque-tube is shorter (as in the case with the HydraMatic transmission in the 3100 truck). My guess is that the Sedan Delivery drive train matches the automobile's drivetrain but I do not know how well these matched up in length to the trucks torque-tube.

Maybe someone else will have better infortmation.

Tim
