The stock wheels on a 53 3100 were 16 x 4.5 and yours are twice as wide.
The wheels on my F250 are 16x7 and I run 265/75R16 tires, but they're BIG. An alternate size is 235/85R16.

You might experience rubbing. Some guys run 215/XX R16's (don't remember the aspect ratio) but they usually run them on the stock wheels.

Was told to run a 215 /50 /16 tire.

That 215 tire would be a bit smaller than stock, which would reduce your top speed somewhat.
A 225/70R16 would be 28+ inches diameter vs ~25 inches diameter for the 215/50. Either would fit on your 7" wide rims. Or a 215/65R16 would be 27" dia.
