Will a 6 volt regulator meet the requirements of an 8 volt battery? I have an 8 volt battery in my 54 rebuild simply because I had a good one on hand. My 6v generator motors like a top when current is applied. When running, the ammeter discharges with load but shows no charging with rpms. Jumper from ground to field terminal on the VR and ammeter shows normal operation. Is the VR simply bad or what?

An 8 volt battery is a solution looking for a problem. Have someone who knows what he's doing adjust the cutout relay to 8.25 volts and the voltage control points to 9.5 volts against a fully charged battery with the engine running at 1500 RPM. Then buy a case of headlight bulbs. I'd choose to trash the 8V battery. Jerry

My thoughts... we went to 8v on 2cyl JD's and had to trash the VR and use a turned-up cut-out. FLAP said it would work fine. Had my doubts and seems they were real. I'll put the 8v back on the JD B. Thanks... Jethro.

The fact that they don't show any internal detail makes me wonder if that is some sort of electronic regulator dressed up to look like a contact point type. The "it can't recharge a dead battery" warning makes me very suspicious of the internal construction. Jerry

OK- - - - -then they're just lying about "won't recharge a dead battery"! Jerry

Ya, I thought that was an odd phrase to use. It's not like you would put a dead battery in a car and then try to charge it back up by running the engine.
I understand on a lightly discharged battery say from leaving the radio on or something you could jump start it and drive somewhere and the battery would normally be charged up.

The current regulator is there to prevent the generator from damaging itself from overcurrent while recharging a dead, or severely low battery. It would require several hundred miles of driving without restarting the engine, but there's no reason a good condition generator/regulator system would not be able to bring a dead battery back up to full charge. That disclaimer is only there to give the manufacturer an out in case their barely-adequate materials and production processes happen to fail under load. There are plenty of real Delco-Remy regulators out there that are either still functional, or can be cleaned up and adjusted to OEM specifications. Jerry

Well fellas... I got a 6v battery from my FLAP and the ammeter shows charging. Put the 8v back in the old B. I knew better.

bartamos "or what" is right !! It amazes me the expense and trouble builders will go to to avoid the modern equipment GM engineers have gone to the trouble to design. Other brands have enough wiring for a computer bot don't mind using a 1-wire Delco alt. The HEI one wire plug it in,maybe 2 with a tach !! Shish !!
Jethro in Virginia We went thru the 8 volt battery trick 60 years ago, wouldn't work then either. I'm just glad you don't have to wonder if your cut--out relay opened when you are walking away any more. Those slippery GM engineers fixed all of that when they turned the charging circuits around and stopped running heavy amperage thru brushes. Now you can carry all of your charging troubles over to your bench in one package--save bad cable connections or cables!!
Waveski Don't you have those children punching the computer in Wisconsin at your local parts store ?? We sure do,have one old timer left who if he can't find it for you ...your out of luck !! Just stocked up on alt. and starter small parts not long ago should get me thru my final truck fixen years !!
