I read in the tech tips that the 261 block has a set of "captains bars forward of the starter". Are these bars about one inch tall each, 1/8 inch wide about a 1/2 inch apart? It kind of looks like the # 11?

My 261 (casting # 3769925) has 2 captain's 5/8" long bars placed 3/4" apart just above the center of the starter. They're like an "11."

My old 235 (casting # 3701481 in front of the fuel pump!) also has the captain bars! I measured the bore to confirm it's a 235. It's a full-pressure 235 and had hydraulic lifters. Folks say it came from a '53 car with Power Glide.

Actually the 261's had two sets of captain bars. The one you mentioned and another one on the other side of the engine behind the exhaust manifold. There is a good tech. article on the 261 at Jim Carter Classic truck parts, which discusses the 261. Here's the link: http://www.oldchevytrucks.com/cgi/htmlos.exe/002315.2.3011496932800016126

Here is a picture that shows the other location of the second captain bar on the 261 engine I am in the process of rebuilding:
