On a 49, is it possible to replace the heater blower motor without draining antifreeze and disconnecting the heater core ?

What style of heater do you have?

I'd be willing to bet that it is, but it's easier to remove the heater from the truck and do it on a bench. Trying to fix something while laying on the floor under the dash sucks.

I'd just get a double ended nipple and stick the two heater hoses together temporarily and then remove the entire unit.

I’ll study it some more tomorrow. I just had the coolant drained for a camshaft gear replacement, I don’t want to drain it again. Lol

You won't have to drain more than a pint or two from the heater core if you connect the two hoses together or just keep the ends of the hoses elevated above the radiator.

If you have this style of heater, you will have to remove the entire unit to replace the motor.

The pictures I took when I replaced the heater core show that the motor comes out the firewall side of the unit. The fan has to be removed before the motor can come out.

oldcarandtrucknut It's a long shot,better do like Otto says,get a catch can take off a hose tie it above fluid level,then theother one get it on your bench. Good time to paint some of it,not the core though. Be extra careful those cores are rare and expensive Carters have them in limited supply I think.

Thanks. My heater is different. I think I could easily clamp off the heater hoses close to the heater core and just drain the core.

The truck doesn’t get driven in the winter so it’s really not a big deal that’s why I’m looking for an easy way.

As someone else mentioned about painting things- it’s already fully restored including the heater box.

Fixite7, I purchased the entire unit shown in the 4th photo above from Classic Parts for $225 a year ago. Other companies wanted $200 for just the core without the header tanks or housing.
