I am not sure when the bearings were repacked with grease. How do you remove the front hub inner bearing seal to get the inner bearing out? Can it be punched out?

Redbird,

See attached web page with an extract from the 1948-51 Shop manual available on line (credit to "oldcarmanualproject.com" for providing this awesome resource):

http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/shop/1948_51truck/51ctsm0306.htm

This specific page provides hub and bearing removal procedures you are seeking.

I used this as reference since there was not another Shop Manual available until '54 which may be slightly different in some instances for your '53 (others may chime in to clarify).

FYI, There are easily available new reprints of the Shop Manual for purchase from lots of sources (search on line). Otherwise, you can always search for procedures through the above web site source as the entire manual is available to search and read.

Hope the above is helpful.

I have the 1954 edition and the procedure is exactly the same. I used it for my ‘52 and it matched the link you posted exactly.

Both front wheel bears packed, new seals installed, replaced both front shocks while I was in there.

Hi, working on 1950's front brakes, I have a question

What is the preferred method for removing a rear seal in the front drum assembly

Remove the outer bearing, then screw the spindle nut back on without the bearing and washer installed. Grab the brake drum, and give it a good yank. The inner bearing will catch on the nut and take the seal out of the hub without doing any damage to the bearing or the seal. I've been doing it that way for 60+ years.

Redbird Nearly 60 yrs. ago an old chevy mechanic showed me how to take the outer bearing off the spindle, put the nut and washer back on jerk the drum off the spindle, the inner bearing and seal would be hanging on the spindle unhurt and re-usable. Now the washer has to be able to get thru the outer race to do that.
