Hello fellow bolters: I have a 47 GMC model FC102 vin FC1029900 with the following ID stamped on the block left of distributor: AFCA547496 and the following cast number just to the right of the distributor: 8835253. A couple of questions: 1. I have reviewed various threads and posted info to decipher these codes and in particular was hoping you could help with the stamped ID left of distributor AACA 547496. 2. The casting number, any way of telling if this block is original to the truck? Is it a 216 engine? Just looking to decipher as much info as I can from these numbers... thank you!

You might try looking HERE, but I'll bet yours is not a GMC engine. The number on the pad to the rear of the distributer on a real GMC six cylinder MAY have a one letter prefix describing slight variance in bore size, main bearing size and rod bearing size when manufactured, then 3 digits describing the size of the engine (yours should be 228) followed by a 5 or 6 digit engine serial number.

The letter prefix decoder is shown below. Although both of the GMC maintenance manuals I have describe the letter code as a SUFFIX, I have only seen them as a PREFIX in the real world. Maybe the guy who wrote the book didn't know the difference.

Think maybe the best suggestion to figure out what you have (and others willing to help out too ) would be:

1. Clean-up the the flat "stamped" pad left of distributor
2. Clean-up "casting number" right of distributor
3. Compare your cleaned up numbers against the list provided in the link that Gord included above.

You should be able to identify what you have at that point.

If you need more help:

4. Take pictures of both areas (+ general views of both sides, front, etc.)
5. Post your pictures in your next reply.

Thanks for the input everyone, I double checked the stamping and casting numbers. They appear as stated previously I'll take pictures and post soon. I was told by the previous owner that this was a very early 47.

Suggest you post a photo of that block casting
That 883… casting might be 383… which would make sense

3835253 is a 1949 216 engine
discontinued in 1951, Replaced by 3835497

Some sage advice from Gord&Fran I had a fat finger typo on the casting it was 3835253. Thank you. The stamped one tho I had right, pics attached: thanks for the input everyone. Hoping you can deduce from there.

The "inliners" link provided by Gord above indicates that casting number used for 1948-49 for Chevy 216s. The pictured serial number sequence does not match the ranges listed (FA for '48 and GA for '49).

Serial number could be something by previous owner(s) as engine not original to your GMC. Anybodies guess how it came about.

At least you now have the basic engine ID info to help when needing parts or reference information.

AFCA = 1948 216 made in Flint and used in the 3600 (3/4 ton) and 3800 (1-ton) trucks.

547496 = unit number starting with 1001.

Oldpickupman My 1948 2-ton with early type 235 (big trucks) has that 48 in a circle just like that,it's an original with only 51'000 miles.Anyway it looks original,had to do a little valve work put on an early 50's car head is fine now.
