I plan to put turn signals on my 53 half ton. I have a signal stat system on my 1940 truck, and they have worked fine for many years now. However, more often than not, I forget to turn them off after making a turn. So, I'm curious if any of you have figured out a means of auto shut off. I don't see any way of having them turned off mechanically. I'm thinking more of an auto timeout. While that wouldn't be quite as goof proof, it would be much better than nothing. So, have any of you found a way to accomplish this?

I have built a elaborate modification to a old truck turn signal Adding a pin under the steering wheel contacts two switches in the turn signal body Then through a series of ladder relay logic - because I didn’t want to add any transistors to my truck - the relays will hold the signal until the steering wheel makes at least a half turn before returning to its home center and only when home do the signals auto kick out. Photos of my crazy turn signal project below, the system is waiting for paint, this old turn signal was fairly unique and I liked how it looked.
A much simpler solution would be adding two bright turn indicators on the steering wheel that cannot be ignored Reminding you to turn off a manual signal -s
That's pretty impressive for sure. It's more involved than I want to get though. I'll probably go for an electronic time out circuit, or the alert lights like you mentioned. Many motorcycles use a timer to cancel their signals. I can't imagine that it's that elaborate. Nice work. Thanks

The company that make them for motorcycles has a unit that would work. Also there are self cancelling "wheel" types. I have one on a willys truck. The easiest thing do is a bright light in the system, under dash, pointed at the floor or a large dash mount bulkhead light. Be creative.

I have a key buzzer out of an early 80s car wired up to the turn signal. The buzzer is under the dash. I don't forget to shut off the signal now!
That's what I did to mine as well. Mine is an old Radio Shack piezo 6-28 volt DC part wired between the center pin on a 3 pin flasher and ground. Made so much noise I wrapped it in a paper towel and closed it into a plastic bag.

the kind used on willys vehicles was a spartan unit, i have one on my jeep. theyre pretty easy to find, and are a good option for pretty much any tubular steering column.
