For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 60 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 60 | I decided to check my rear brakes today since I was having a little trouble stopping. The fronts were fine. They had been done prior to me buying the truck and a two speed rear end was put on too but no mention of the rear brakes having been done. I pulled off the drums and noticed a piece of my brakes were missing. I also noticed both brake cylinders were locked up, I had been driving with only the front brakes(only drove is twice, short distance). The piece I am missing is a bolt with a spring on the back of the backing plate that attaches to a washer like piece on the inside with nipples that turn the brake cylinder to adjust the in and out of the shoes. Are these availabe in Auto part stores or is it part of the backing plate which I would have to find at the wrecking yard? I am putting in an oreder for two brake cylinder rebuild kits from Jim Carter, should they have this piece? Anyone have a spare? Below are pics of the part and how it looks installed on the backing plate. http://community.webshots.com/photo/264653311/2409938650040363269xLxHVM http://community.webshots.com/photo/264653311/2390982930040363269ovNicF | | | | | Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 587 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 587 | You didn't say what year, but looks like Huck style older cylinders. You may be able to find those yet at NAPA or parts vendors. I never had luck with rebuilds, you can't get all the rust pits cleaned up inside, and it will leak again if not smooth, ruin your new linings if you are doing those. I get linings re-lined at local brake supply house. They sometimes have some of this old stuff or can get. They are an old business and sharp on info. I bet though, that those adjusters will be a junkyard item. Jeff at Bow Tie Bits .com sells used parts, and I have gotten big truck items from him that others don't have. The cylinders if found, will be $50 to $90 I bet. Later years had Two in them and hard to find also. Get new hub seals while apart also. Rear end lube does damage to new shoes, and you can't clean them with Brakleen once they leak on them. They will grab real hard after that.

My truck is a 48 1.5T but the orriginal owner had the rear end put on in South Dakota prior shipping to Hawaii. It is off a GM truck from the markings. I will try that bowtiebits.com site. Again thanks,
