This may have already been beaten to death, but I would like to try to find some information regarding the under-bed spare tire carrier for the AD series half-tons. I realize that they are as rare as chicken lips, but I was wondering if anyone might have one that a person could get the dimensions off of. There is a line drawing of the carrier in the Jim Carter catalog (it appears to come from a truck assembly manual). Not bragging, but I think with some dimensions to work with, I believe I could simulate the build with some sturdy flat bar and rod. Never under-estimate what you can get when you turn a redneck loose with a welding machine, cutting torch and a stack of metal. Any help is appreciated.

Why not look for an underbed carrier from a later model Chevy or Ford truck and adapt it for the AD?

TexasJim50,

Yup, you are correct that this topic has been discussed a bunch in the past. This link (found by using the "Searching the Site" links in the left margin) provides a very detailed and large amount of info on this topic:

https://www.stovebolt.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=412522&page=all

Take the time to read through the entire link (plus those links within the thread) as I believe you will get an understanding of the spare tire carriers (and the different year variations) to point you where you want to go.

All credit (and thanks) for this info to the original thread participants that shared their knowledge and experience. thumbs_up

Jim, Is this what you are looking for? I am in the process of removing the bed slats to refinish and saw your thread.

I think he's referring to the slide out type that were used up through 1950. I paged thru my Jim Carter catalog and saw the drawing he was referring to, and it was the earlier style.

But the later type like in your picture would be much easier to fabricate.

Mine (late style) isn't installed yet and I'd be happy to send pics and dimensions.

I actually had a member (don't remember who - sorry) send me dimensions for the 51 and later style spare carrier. This was before I found one on my parts road trip to the Lower 48.

Attached here. Hope that helps. If anyone needs additional dimensions, I can definitely measure mine.

You need these pieces (picture) plus J-hook & washer-nut. I copied the picture and failed to note the author's name.

If money is no object, here are 3 of the 4 pieces available now at auction:

For a real working truck on the farm and such places, the under bed spare tire is too close to the ground. Also the parts that are supposed to slide gets rusty and jams. The track for the wheel carrier (section 7.779) is bolted to the crossmember of the bed. Usually this remains on most trucks. The other 3 pieces were usually removed, put in the barn and the tire thrown in the back of the bed.

Here is a picture of a creation of an enterprising soul (again I failed to note the author). If you don't plan on making a trailer queen, fabricate your own parts.

Had no idea these are so hard to find. One on Flea Bay for mucho dollas. Glad my truck has one. Good point to maybe crawl under and grease up the slide channels.

Well, folks, after seeing all the responses and doing some serious head scratching, I have come to the conclusion that an under-bed spare tire carrier is not that essential to the renovation of this truck at this time. Maybe at some point in the future, if I can find one or get the time to fabricate a home-made one, fine. But at this point, it is not a deal breaker. Thanks to all who chimed in with information and thoughts about the subject.

You could cheat a little and put on a '51+ spare carrier. Unless you're going for total authenticity, who's gonna care?

Or find a modern spare tire cable lift unit at the pick & pull, fab up something to hang it on and call it good...

Oh well,
The spare will enjoy riding in the bed instead of under the bed.
