The Stovebolt Site Forums The Parking Lot Big Bolts Save a 6100 Dump Today

Hi Folks: Great little site here...just a quick note to let you folks know that I saved my first 1955 2nd series 6100 dump truck from the blue torches today. I found the truck abandoned next to a farm house. The truck was used to haul wood for many years, 40,000 original miles. The old farmer told me he had someone work on the drivers side rear brake and he had to pound the drum on, after that the wheel would not turn, so he parked it and that was the end of using the ole girl. I noticed the truck after my purchase of an Allis Chalmers D17 Series IV from him. I mentioned to him what a uique old truck it was and he mentioned that he would like to sell it. We'll the rest is history. The engine is a 235 six, with a HD 4 speed tranny and has a two speed rear axle.

I have a couple of questions for the 55 2nd Series 6100 experts, they are:

1. Are brake spring or hardware kits available for this ole truck or are there other later Chevy two ton models brake spring kits that will interchange. I see that my 55 and 57 Chevy Truck Service manauls are very specific about the different springs that attached to the rear brake shoes. If so, could you please direct me to a vendor. Napa tells me that can't get the brake spring hardware.

2. The front cab window is busted. I have two half ton 55 and 56 Chevy donor trucks, that have good glass in them. ? are the front windshield rubber seals available. If so, can someone please advise on vendors who may carry them.

In closing, the original black paint is still on the main frame of the truck and I look forward to sharing my restoration with anyone who is interested. This truck will become a workhorse around my hobby christmas and hardwood tree farm. Thanks for listening to me ramble, I was glad to pick up a good ole chevy rather than another make.

can't help w/ the brake parts, but any of the repro dealers, like the forum sponser, American classic [top of the page] will have the glass seals, and the windshields should be available from any auto-glass place around

we'll all be interested in updates on yer progress, and get a writeup w/ some pics to the editor for the gallery - we all love pics

Hello Red58 and Chev4t6: Thanks for the replies, hope I can find a spring kit...I already have a couple of digital photo's and will send them to the moderator??? To answer Chev4t6 ? Orange = Orange as in Allis Chalmers Orange both persian orange and Corporate Orange...I have an Allis collection that grew from many orange tractors into yellow Allis Industrial and Dynahoe equipment... thus the need for the Dump Truck, oh and since I am in Great Bend, New York and like Syracuse, the handle orange also applies to them as well. I will also be using the dump to haul bulk coal to fend off the cold northern New York winters. Anyone have a good idea for a roll back tarp for the dump box? Hope all is well with you guys!

I've never had trouble getting brake parts from either NAPA or my BIG truck parts store. I've done both my 56 8400 Wrecker and 57 10500 Fire Truck in the past few years and was able to get EVERYTHING new.

I also have one Allis-Chalmers tractor (future restoration project), it's a rare Un-Styled 1938 WC Speed Patrol Road Grader.

Mike B: Hey man, what a site you have there! I want more big bolts now! Back in my early 20's I was heavy into the 1/2 Chevs 55-66. I stopped after the kids came along, and am doing Allis Chalmers tractors and Industrial equipment at present. I don't know how, but somehow I migrated back to the Chevy Trucks but this time they are at least 2 ton and up. I have found one sad 55 COE with a grain dump box. The box is in great shape while the cab leaves a little to be desired, pretty rough and abused. The fella wants to sell it for its collectors value which where I live is just not there. The machine does not run and the fender work is pretty banged up. Most I would go for the ole girl would be 3 bills. He is thinking in the 1000's. Not really sure what its value is. I am afraid that the parts search for the COE will be a nightmare. Any thoughts? Again, keep up the great work on your big bolts, wish I had some of the ones you have. Orange!!!
