A guy has got a 1977 250 six cylinder for free in the paper. He pulled to drop in a V-8 and claims low miles. Should I be looking into bringing it home for my '51 3100? Easy swap or major headache?

Somewhere in between. Not an easy swap, but not necessarily a major headache. It will depend on your ability to fabricate and weld. If you're a novice, then this will probably be a bit overwhelming - time consuming to say the least.

Several 'bolters have done this project will good results. But dropping in a v8 is no less work than the 6.

ftyler is absolutely correct in his assertion. Personally, if it were my truck a modern 6 or V8 would only get in over my dead body. I would hold out for a 261 chev, or 270 or 305 jimmy; something much more period correct. But then I'm real partial to old school.
