Posting on behalf of my son and his newly aquired 59 Apache. His starter quit working, so he sent to me to rebuild. Truck has been converted to 12 volt system. I need to find bushings and brushes for this, not having much luck. Id on starter is a 1107634 and then below is 9 G 13 which I believe is year month day. Truck still has the inline 6. I got a kit from my antique tractor supplier which included the starter number, but brushes/bushing were different. Any help for part supplier would be greatly appreciated.

The # you provided is for a 12 volt starter which a 1959 Chevy P/U should be. It is possible that the parts supplier you used sent you a rebuild kit for a 6 volt starter by mistake. Try another supplier not tractor related.

IHPWR Got any old part stores with old guys to help. My local Fisher parts store got me several bushings,brushes,leather washers, not long ago. They are getting harder to find though !!

IHPWR His truck came new 12 volt,also if you have any old garages they might have em. I kept all that stuff handy,it was cheap back then. I think you can buy the commutator end cap with new bushing in it,also try Jim Carter truck parts in Kansas City. Another thing if you find an old timer with a growler to check your armature for short circuits.

2-3 months ago I bought brushes, springs, and bushings for a '57 starter from my local O'Reilly's. Bushings took overnight, the others were on the shelf.

I agree with Fixite7 that this truck came from GM with a 12 volt system.

You can try Napa they usually carry those parts or get within a day or so..

? For a 59' Apache..
But please confirm those part Numbers

Well, don't want to step on toes but there's too much assumption here. Chevy came with 12V in 55.2. I this offer a note. There are lots of reasons a starter "quits working". I would check a few other areas.

1. The battery and the battery cables
2. The starter solenoid or side terminal foot switch.
3. The ignition switch
4. Then a test on the bench with battery charger as a power supply
5. Then a visual and shaft movement test
6. Then an inside inspection, checking the bushings which have to be really bad to have a starter actually "quit" moving or growling or humming or intermittent or clicking
7. Then the brushes. Maybe you already see that brushes are worn down to nothing.
8. Then the commutator
9. Then check the motor for hydraulic lock or other.


I know you did not ask anything but where to get bushings and brushes, so probably you did all this checking. But without any symptom explanation other than "starter quit" and not knowing your expertise, thought I would mention a list for the archives. Helping is sometimes being sure the poster is not jumping a testing phase or is asking the right question. Like "why did my starter quite working".

I agree with Shaffer, go to NAPA. Take old bushings and brushes, end caps, shafts, calipers........ Let them pull bushings/brushes until you find them. Don't care too much about part numbers if they fit/match.

bartamos All good points,once the starter is on the floor take jumper cables to it,you all know the noise it should make. If it does check that other stuff !!
