As long as I have everything apart for a clutch replacement, I'm replacing the rear main engine seal and the transmission seals, etc.
What is the preferred oil for use in the 3 speed manual transmission?

If memory serves me the traditional 80/90 is what is used. I just rebuilt mine and am going to put some fancy AMSOIL 80/140 or something to that effect in it.

Really bad choice- - - - -the super slippery synthetic lube will prevent the synchronizer rings from gripping the gears, and you'll end up with a lot of gear grinding, particularly on a downshift. Those heavy gears have enough inertia that synthetics don't work well in them. The straight 90 weight mineral oil (not hypoid) that's specified for Ford N-series tractors is exactly what stovebolt 3 and 4 speeed transmisisons need. Our local source in the southeast USA is Tractor Supply Company, but I'm not sure if that business operates in other parts of the country. Jerry

Thanks a lot for all the replies. I know the manual specs 90 but thought with 70 years of exponential improvement in oil technology something else might be more appropriate.
We do have Tractor Supply here and my dad has a '52 8N.

Sorry about that Otto. Yes, it's my 4 speed gearbox (transmission)

Here is what Jerry is talking about and what I use in my ‘52 3100 three speed.

The GL1 oil supposedly does not have sulphur in it. In the Ford tractor there are brass components that can be affected by the sulphur content. I think the other oils do have sulphur which is a good lubricant under pressure, like gear to gear contact points. this is what I have been told over the years.
I believe anything up to and including GL-4 doesn’t have sulphur added. At least that’s what my research has revealed. GL-4 is more heavy duty than lower numbers and isn’t too hard to find.

What I used was from a red&white Amoco 5 gal bucket that simply said "90 wt gear oil" that had been in the shop since the 80's. Looked as new as this morning. May be why it still slips out of high gear... I'll switch.
