Found a '40 flat bed. VIN plate still attached with its clutch head screws, on firewall is totally blank (all the paint worn off) but the stamped in number is 5WA123854. Can someone point me to an accurate VIN decode site, please.

Here's the breakdown for your serial number 5WA12-3854...

5 = Kansas City, MO Assembly Plant
WA = 1940 1-1/2 ton 133" wheelbase
12 = Month (December 1943)
3854 = unit number starting with 1001. So, you have the 2,854th WA out of plant 5.

That's your serial number. Whether it's your "VIN" depends on whether the serial number or the engine number was used on the title as the VIN. Many states used the engine number through 1955.
