I was gonna vote for the 12V-71 Detroit ... but it's not on the ballot ...

John You should hear a 16v-71 Detroit run. It was one of our emergency backup generators that we did maintenance on. Do a u-tube search.

Last week, one of my former students told me he was planning to surprise me with the gift of a 702 GMC V-12, but the owner of the engine sold it for scrap iron the day before he went by to purchase it! Jerry

Don -- I've heard one of those run. Not impressed. With that many cylinders, it sounds like noise. You have to be able to hear the individual notes to enjoy the true melodic magic of a symphony. So maybe I will change my vote to a 6-71. I like listening to Grigg's 4-53T run, too.
My other choice would be a Pratt and Whitney R-985. Had one fly over the house nice and slow earlier -- pure rapturous music! (The DHC-2 Beaver from Test Pilots' School)
6 cylinder gas engines are ok, but nothing to write home about in my book. Although ... I do like following Chris Sweet's Green Machine -- the 261 on twin mufflers sounds as good as it gets (for a gas engine). But I like the sound of a 4 cylinder aircooled Boxer with tweeter pipes better ...

John Subaru boxer 4 cyl, turbo charged? Or, one of those underpowered Volkswagens?

I would have to vote for 2 cycle Detroit Diesel or 2 cylinder jOHN DEERE tractor. They are both music to my ears. Maybe that is why my hearing isn't as good as it used to be. Jim
Leo ... off topic?? Moi??? Jay just needed a little help jazzing up his discussion (he's so boring you know ... ) I'd better be careful -- he'll make me disappear ... or make snakes appear in my car ...
Don -- Really??? You need to ask that or are you just looking for a reaction to your adjective?? It's valid, by the way. BUT ... underpowered by who's standard?? Power is sufficient for the intended purpose, I'd say. I'd rather have 1600 cc's behind me than 350 cubic inches in front.
JM -- Thanks for sticking with me on the Detroits. Great initials, by the way -- you are obviously above average in intelligence and ruggedly handsome.

How about a one cylinder two stroke Diesel that can run forward or backwards, or half a turn in both directions? The Lanz Bulldog! It can also be started with a 12 gauge blank shotgun shell.
That's downright amazing!
OOPS! Wrong tractor!
The Field Marshal is the one with the shotgun shell starter!

No! No! No! Y’all are way off track. The BEST sounding engine is the one that was cranking the double ice cream churns at the 2019 Stovebolt Homecoming in VA. Why? Because it MAKES ICE CREAM!

Yep Jay definitely "B" . The cam really sounds solid, it's like it wants to run. 283's, 302's and 327 love higher RPM's they just sing as they get faster.

I had it up to 4500 for a millisecond. Really sounded nice.
No, no, NO!!!! V engines are EVIL. of the Devil!! BAD!!!
Merlins??? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Make the bad noise STOP!!!! Only thing worse is a jet engine. I must ritually cleanse myself now ....
...
Was that over the top dramatic enough??? Seriously, who doesn't love the sound of 4 Merlins?
BUT ....
Having now successfully hijacked this thread away from Lugnuts (my week is complete ), I have to award *Ultimate Victory* to Wally for his brilliant and devastating invocation of one of the greatest engines EVER --- Charley Allnut's power plant of the African Queen ...
“there ain't nobody in Central Africa but yours truly knows how to get up a head of steam on The African Queen.”
...
BUT ...
I will accept a flag on the play as the African Queen's engine is not technically an internal combustion/Otto Cycle (in Thermodynamic terms) but a Rankine Cycle engine ... And I believe that we, in keeping with the spirit of this site, are talking about Otto/Diesel Cycle engines here ... Just sayin' ...
Top THAT, Jerry!
I had to take Thermodynamics 3 times in college, so I know these things ...
Want to know more about a D-type steam boiler?? I'm your man!
