I'm looking for a spread tire side mount bracket for my 49 3600. I had this same truck - year and model - when I was a teenager and it had the side mount spare. I like the look and functionality. I know this was not offered in 1949. The tires I'm running are 245 R7016. Reading through this forum I'm wondering if I have the room for a side mount spare with this size tire?
Any experience with mounting a spare on a 3600 with this size tire would be appreciated ... and, does anyone know where I could find this bracket? Thank you.
I have a homemade side mount spare bracket on my '53 3600. I'm running 235/85 R16s and there is sufficient room, so I'm pretty confident you'll be able to make it work. My bracket consists of angle iron which I welded and drilled for 3 wheel studs. It is welded to the stake pockets. I can take the spare off and get some pics for you if you'd like. I've had it this way for 20+ years and I like it a lot. Spare is convenient and not taking up space in the bed.

I'd be interested in seeing your set up. I've been thinking of making one for my 3600.

Coincidentally I made one for my 49 3600 just a couple of weeks ago. Didn't take long (maybe a few hours after the paint dried) and all with steel I had on hand; works really well been driving it a lot and like the look and functionality of it.
I chose to bolt mine to the stake pockets.
The bonus of the 3600 of course (for anyone reading NOT familiar) is that longer wheelbase of the 3600 means there's no need for a "dished" wheel well.

Here are the pics of my custom spare carrier. You'll notice that it got a bit of a twist in it at some point in its 20+ year life, but it's going strong and works great. I usually have a piece of thick rubber between the tire and the running board to help spread the weight of the spare and prevent it from vibrating the mount too much as I drive.
North Coast 3800 Wow that is how these trucks should look, you don't have to worry about hurting it. My 51 3600 is bruised on the right front doot/fender from cattle hurding but door works fine,is the best winch truck iv'e had. Mama runs the electric winch on 13 foot 6 gin poles while I swing a big ole chunk of firewood up on the bed.Our record is an oak 5 feet 6 at the stump, have pockets low on the rear to stab 1-1/2 inch pipe into then chain on a big ole slab, split it at home in the snow.
Barnfind49- Nice work! Did you sketch this up or was this your own shop build. I've found a 1955 GM shop drawing dated 4.5.55, part no. 3720900 R.P.O. 341. This is what I see in your photos. Do you have a dimension of where the triangular wheel mount plate ended up? Like you, I have a 1949 truck so distance from cab to rear wheel well won't be a problem.
TGill, you might want to send Barnfind a PM as his post is 2 years old.
