Hello Everyone,

As part of my 1951 project I got an old horn from the seller and I tried putting power to it with no luck on getting any sound out of it.

The horn is riveted together but has a plug at the top.

I thought maybe I could try putting some fluid inside to clean it out and see if it comes back to life before I just buy a new aftermarket horn.

Thanks for the tips.

What you have doesn't sound like a stock horn. I doubt that soaking it in solvent will help much.
The one I have on my 1951 can be disassembled, exposing the vibrating mechanism and allowing adjustment.
You can see it in the photo of the engine compartment. The hemispherical cover on the rear comes off with a single screw, and the bell in the front then can be unbolted from the diaphragm assembly.
You might be able to get an original horn from a member here. Try posting an ad in the swap meet section.

Post a photo of your horn so we can ID it.

I thought I had a bad horn and it ended up being a bad ground. I ran a new ground directly from the horn to the frame and the horn came back to life. 54 3100.

x2 on the grounds - Had spider nests in the 49 horns. Gave them a good cleaning - but I'd advise against disassembling too far. Like dgrinnan says, grounds are critical - in my case the little buggers had caused corrosion (affecting the grounding points) through the unit but I was able to clean and polish them back to life.

I ran a separate ground wire from the horn bodies as well and that's worked well.

My horns didn't work. I slipped a razorblade between the 2 pieces of Bakelite(?) in the horns because they were stuck together. They then worked.

Thanks Guys

Looks like the horn I have is not from an original 51.

I will post something here and shop around to try and find one.
