When I set out the parts, there is an extra rubber piston/washer that was not in the pieces I pulled out. can someone please point me in the direction of an exploded diagram or photo of the assembly order of the pistons, pushrod, check valve, spring, etc.

It is the seat for the check valve on the end of the spring.

George, I don't know how I didn't see the washer in the end, must have had an eye closed! I have now got it all together & will start & put it all together over the next couple of days. I have printed off the diagram of the master cylinder, so my sons will have something to help them in the years to come.
I am making a new sound deadening layer to fit under the floor mat, which should also reduce some heat coming up from underneath.

Is it supposed to be there? There was one fitted when I pulled it all apart, and there was a new one in the kit. Is it an omission on the diagram?

You put it in there I suppose. There are 2 small bypass holes in the bottom of the reservoir. Make sure they are open. One is very small. You may need to run a tag wire through it.
