The Stovebolt Site Forums The Parking Lot Big Bolts Name that 'Bolt...

Yesterday I went to look at a '58 GMC truck that was advertised for sale about an hour away from my house. I am not real familiar with the GMC 'Bolts so I thought i would ask here. The ID plate says Max GVW 22000 and combined Max GVW 32000. I didn't notice a model designation and I forgot to take the camera with me, so I'm going by memory.

What is the difference between the two numbers?

The seller said it was bought new as a cab & chassis. It has a 14' wooden bed. The engine is a six cylinder and it has a two speed rear. It appears to be mostly original with the exception of the added oil filter...which is HUGE... It also has Hydro-Vac brakes. The engine runs... a little smoke... The brakes work. The clutch works. The wipers and heater fan work. It has the original radio, but it doesn't seem to work. The prettiest part of the whole truck is the hood bird which appears to be MINT condition.

Can anyone tell me what the model # would be?

The only number I remember seeing was on the grille "370". The seller said it was a 370 CI engine, but that seems awful big for an inline six...

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I don't know much about Big 'Bolts though I may soon own this one.

Isn't 370 the model number?

Of the "AD" style GMC trucks i've seen, the model number was on the side, about in the spot where the word Chevrolet would be on a chevy.

Of the "Task Force" style GMC trucks i've seen, the model number was tward the top center of the grill just below the GMC logo.

There's a guy near me with a GMC 350 "AD" style truck.. the truck just so happens to have a 350 V8 in it, and he tried to tell me that the 350 on the side indicated that it was the original motor.. but after asking around here, I learned that 350 is actually the model number.

That was a big truck.. if it's model number was 350, then 370 seems like a logical model number for a big GMC truck, too.

Way more likely than a straight 6 being a 370, anyway.

Altho I understand GMC had a series of oddball engines, like a V12 702 cid motor! There were also 305, 351, and 401 GMC V6 engines.. but not a 370 I6

That is what I was thinkin'. 370 seems more likely to be a model designation than the engine size.

I just wanted to check and be sure.

I wonder what the engine size really is, and I still don't understand the difference between the 22000 and 32000.

Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) is the total allowable weight of the truck and anything loaded on it (fuel, passengers, custom body, cargo). This is usually limited by the tires, springs, and brakes.

Gross Combined Vehicle Weight (GCVW) is the total allowable weight of the truck and any trailer its towing.

Does anyone know what engine would have been stock in a '58 370?

by my books, the GMC engines in 58 were the 269.5 [270?] I6 [standard] and 336.1 V8 [optional]

Just a note fpr those that may not already know. The 55-59 GMC pickups were available with the Pontiac V8s of the same vintage. A little bigger and a little more HP than chevies, just so GMC could stay "better", in my humble opinion.
