The Stovebolt Site Forums The Parking Lot Big Bolts extension mirrors

I was just browsing the forum and came across the accesory install link, and saw some "factory" (?) extension mirrors that look like they will use the existing 3 holes for the small truck mirror. I have a '56-3800 and will be adding wood sides to bed and will need to see whats behind, but really don't want to drill new holes for the "west coast" style two arm mirrors. Are these available? (or do I need to be on the for-sale page) thanks, Frank

Frank - you musta seen the mirrors in my accessory manual posting - I've never seen any of those in the real world, and suspect they'll be like hen's teeth, much talked of/not available! also my experience w/ mirrors on a single long arm is they vibrate so much you never have a clear view in'em any way - won't hurt to have it in the parts wanted, but don't get yer hopes up

I have seen a number of the other style in that manual that require the extra holes, or at least I've had doors that have the mount parts still attached!

Bill...yep, I did see it in your page, and I agree the single arms vibrate a lot..got em on my '47 Dodge and cant see anything when I'm traveling over 45 miles an hour. Won't hurt to ask though...Frank

I have long single arm mirrors on my Fire Truck and they work fine. I think you can see then on my web site, they are factory stock and mount in the 3 holes provided.

They would be easy to reproduce, just crimp the ends of a 3/4" heavy wall pipe, put one small bend in it, cut to the correct length and get the orientation correct...the ends are not crimped on the same plane.

I just made mine 3" longer to clear the fire body better. They are off of the truck. Do you have the ell brackets or do you need it all?

I may have a set around here somewhere, need to look.

Mike..are you suggesting to use the mounting base from the original mirrors, cut off most of the arm, then add the straight pipe? That could be a solution, if nothing else can be found. I don't know why I don't want to use "west coast" type (Ihave some new ones), but just don't want to add all those holes!! Frank

Hey Frank,

No, I wasn't thinking about modifing the small arm. The long arm mirrors have two ell brackets that bolt into the three original holes. The ell bracket on top has 2 bolt holes and the bottom one has 1 hole. The arm bolts between them allowing it to be adjustable or fold in if you hit something.

What do your west coast mirrors look like? Are they the original TF adjustable type? I'm looking for a set.

botha you guys are dreamers, Mike!! you won't find the TF westcoast style any easier than the extendables - e-bay's prolly the best [long term] bet, but it wouldn't be too hard to fake it using parts from more modern mirrors, maybe from a wrecker - just have to fab the 3 actual mount pieces - I have seen those mounts still on TF doors, mirrors long gone, and they're pretty basic, just flat steel
