I've been trying (unsucessfully) for several weeks to find reasonable insurance for my '54 4100. Several companies, ie; Hagerty, State Farm and Grundy will give me quotes, even accept my money, write a policy and send me proof cards. Then out of the blue they tell me they cannot cover the truck or they send a different policy for 4-5 times the premium with a bill enclosed. I only drive the truck for parades and to/from shows so the annual mileage is in the 200-500 range. The last company (Grundy) told me they were sorry but the truck had no collector value! Has anyone had any luck getting collectors or classic insurance on a BIG BOLT?

My trucks are insured with J.C. Taylor www.jctaylor.com , they are one of the largest antique car insurance companies. I've been with them for 30 years.

If you want to pull a trailer try Gulfway at www.racensur.com

DJ112, yes I have a Farm Tax Exempt status with the state, however farm tags are $39.50 in Oklahoma whereas the regular tag is only $26.00 since the truck is maxed out on years registered. Same thing with an Antique/Classic tag, it costs more than a regular tag. My farm insurance policy does not cover on the road vehicles. I'll try some of the companies the rest of you have suggested, but keep um coming. Thanks

Martin,

Have you tried looking at the companies listed on the Links Page? Go to the Links Page using the menu bar at the top of this page.

Regards,
John

Depending on what you haul weight wise with your truck you should be able to get insurance on it as an antique vehicle as you would a pickup truck. I run regular plates on my 2 tons and insure them as antiques.

My '49 2 ton is insured through State Farm.
It has full coverage [ including full glass & comprehensive ] & it costs about $120 a year.

The catch is you must be very specific in choosing the correct terms with your insurance agent.

With State Farm you must request a
" Limited use antique & classic policy ".

You will need an appraisal on the truck to get this cheap coverage.

This policy limits the use of the truck to no more than 2000 miles a year & it can only be used for functions such as car shows & parades.

The wording in the policy does allow for
" occasional pleasure use ".

I run a farm plate on my '72 dump truck("Patriot") and plan to put farm plates on my '56 flatbed ("Spot"). The insurance is reasonable through my local farm bureau insurance and the only restriction is that it is used for work on my farm and not for any commercial or for hire work. As I only use it for hauling to the farm and farm work this turns out to be a great fit. Do you have farm bureau insurance in your area?
Regards,
David

My Farm Insurance is with Farm Bureau of Oklahoma. They will not write a policy on an Antique. They will of course write a regular policy at regular rates which are too darn high for a 500 mile a year truck. By the way, by reasonable I'm talking less than $100 a year. State Farm was $186 for 6 months. I'm just a poor retired civil servant living on a fixed pension so the cheaper the better! Thanks guys for the ideas.

I have a 1951 firetruck used for only parades. It is insured with State Farm at $26 every six months. I'm in Virginia.

Virginiafiretruck, I had the $26 deal with State Farm but they canceled because my truck is "original" not "restored". Don't know why it makes any difference but apparently it does.

I don't know anything about that. Mine is in the restoration phase but it is mostly original at this point. The old rusted water tank has been removed and it has been sand blasted and primer coated. I don't want to ask State Farm because I don't want to risk getting cancelled.

"Original" might suggest that everything on the truck is what it came with when it rolled out of the factory.. crappy tires, lugbolts that could break at any time, and spongy brakes with rusty lines that will probably rupture at the least opportune time.

"Restored" probably means to them that the truck has been properly restored.. new brake lines, rebuilt MC, fresh tires and pads, etc.

If I was an insurance guy, i'd be real spooked about insuring a 50 year old 3,000+ lbs rustbucket.

Not to say your truck is a rust bucket.. but it's not like they're comming out to inspect the truck before they insure it, so they have to assume the worst.

Its not as cheap, but I've been able to run my 39 1.5 ton through progressive direct by adding it online for pleasure use. Its liability only.

My concern if I was in the insurance business and I am. Would be the brakes and the maintenance of such system. Not sure if any of you have ever tapped one of today's newer vehicles with a real bumper, but it smashes little cars up real nice with very little damage to the bolt. (Cow Catcher, Camry Catcher, What's the difference?)

You know when I first got my '50 1/2 ton home, I asked my little brother to give me a push with his '87 Toyota pickup, since the bumpers lined up.

I don't know what he was thinking, but I heard that 4 popper rev, and he slammed into the '50 back end and gave me what felt like a slight jolt.. I got out and the front of his truck looked like he just did a nose dive off a cliff... there wasn't a scratch on the back of the '50.

Like a corvette slamming into an armored car.
