| | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,097 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,097 | I just recently acquired a vintage transmission and am not able to find much information on it.
It is a 3 speed floor shift with a 4 bolt top cover, torque tube variety, likely a truck as the lower mount holes are threaded.
Casting Number 590452, Date Code L 22 0 which based on some information I have found is likely 12-22-1930.
It also has a very cool "Bowtie" cast in the housing just below the casting number and also on the top cover.
It is non syncro with straight cut gears and in remarkably good condition for it's age.
I would like to know what year vehicles used this transmission and whatever else someone could share.

1931 was the first year to have external mounting ears.

In the mid-1930's GM launched an advertising campaign for the "silent second gear"- - - -a transmission with constant-mesh helical gears and synchronizers to do the actual shifting rather than sliding straight cut gears in and out of mesh. People were so used to the noisy straight cut 1st. and 2nd. gears that they would drive for miles in second- - - -forgetting to shift to high gear which was direct drive.

It's not unusual to have the part number one number off of the casting number back in the early days. There is no synchronizer in this trans and all the gears are straight cut. The oldest book I have is a 1935 car Motor's Manual and it shows a non syncro trans for the Standard and a syncro version for the Master. The book also shows the 35 standard trans with some helical gears so this one is an earlier version.
It also does not have the bearing retainer with the sleeve for the T/O bearing to slide on. Hopefully someone locally can use it.
