Any advantage to replacing a OK running 283 with a good running 292 in 1964 Chevy C50 flat bed?

mule 1951,

To me it really boils down to preference. Me...I prefer the 292 L6. I like the torque and simplicity of the in-line six...but the 283 is a fine engine also...

Just my 2 cents!!!

none whatsoever, especially if it's running fine - even the base 283 has more hp than the 292, and the same torque - the optional 283's have lots more hp than the 292 - up to about 50 more - also easier to find parts for - if ain't broke, why break it? grin

The 292 develops torque at about 1500rpm but the 283 at about 3000. Sure the 283 has more hp because of higher rpm. My 292 is a much stronger engine for pulling a heavy load or trailering than the 283 I had. The big difference is top speed which is a difference of about 15 mph. I'm not interested in going over a hundred any way. Jim

I remember when I was a teen working with dad in his construction company. His 1963 C60 dump truck was rated at 19,500 and had a 292, 4-speed and 2-speed rear. The quarry roads were rather steep and I used to crawl outta there with no problem at all...and that was tipping the scales at over 32,000 pounds. Probably not a good idea to be overloaded, but the C60's are tough and I never had a problem in the years that I drove it. True, the gearing plays into the equation, but the 292 did everything I ever wanted it to do. Further, if you look at most drivetrain configurations and gearing, most C60's weren't made for over the road use anyhow...

Just some more food for thought
