With the cover off, I got the 4 7/16" distances between the outer edges of the forks and the outsides of the shifter grooves. Should be in neutral on both parts. I put on the cover and put in some bolts. I could shift from 2nd-->3rd-->4th but it just clanks when I try for 1st or reverse.

Does it have some thing to do with that gear down there that has straight cut gears (and not angled gears)? I could send some pictures later.

Thanks,

There's a lever that moves the 1st/reverse gear that pivots down one side of the tranny. The top end of that lever also has to line up on the top cover when installing it. You need to be sure that the two forks AND the lever are lined up when installing the cover. Somebody posted a link here to a video of the SM420 a while back. I'll see if I can find that.

[on edit] the link is in this post. The lever and cover info appears at about 16 minutes in.

Thanks Kevin. I think I was knocking the lever forward when I lower the cover. I positioned the lever a little bit to the rear and got it done. Thanks again!
