For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jun 2017 Posts: 9 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2017 Posts: 9 | I have a 1968 C60 dump truck that I have recently installed all new brake lines and wheel cylinders. The brakes work great but now I am thinking about upgrading the single reservoir master cylinder to a dual for safety reasons. Can anyone tell me what master cylinder I should use or any dos and don'ts of this. Thank you in advance. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy miller873, welcome, is your truck a single axle or a tandem? Does your truck currently have power steering? Does your truck have an air compressor on it? Does your truck have a hydraulically actuated clutch? | | | | | Joined: Jun 2017 Posts: 9 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2017 Posts: 9 | Thank you for the quick response. It is a single axle. It has power steering. No air compressor. No hydraulic clutch. It does have a power brake booster. Thanks again. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy miller873, unfortunately the sixties are a time of change in the medium/ heavy truck hydraulic brake world. I found a part number for a dual system master cylinder which is listed for a 1968 C60, the part number is Raybestos MC36346. If you were to install this master cylinder you would either have to install another vacuum booster for the second brake system, or you could install a Hydroboost system on the firewall in front of the dual master cylinder. I am not sure if a combination valve would be required on a drum/drum brake system. If you have a medium/heavy truck wrecker near you he or she may be able to supply the parts for the conversion. The master cylinder is available from RockAuto for $205.89, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2017 Posts: 9 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2017 Posts: 9 | Thank you, I appreciate the input. I will check it out. From what I have read a proportioning valve isn't neccessary on drum/drum systems but I am sure not an expert on this. I would just like to assure that I still have some brakes if I lose fluid for some reason. Thanks again. | | |
