Hi everyone, I hope this is the right section for this if not I apologies.

I have a 1963 or 1965 Chevy C60 Dump truck and recently it had a piston go bad and lost compression.

I am looking at rebuilding the engine but before I even start I was trying to see how difficult it would be to get the parts for it.

So I have been trying to find out what engine I even have in the truck but I am having difficulties with it.

I know that I can take the engine apart and measure the Cylinders and stuff to find out
But I would like a basic idea first if I could.

So I was hoping someone here with better knowledge and experience on the subject could tell me what the engine is.

I have some pictures and numbers off the engine block well all the ones that I can find that is.

Should be a 292 L6, first year for that series engine.

I just got it out of the woods and back at the shop a few minutes ago,
I am going to pressure wash the side of the engine so I can see if there are anymore numbers on it.

So I found a few more stamps on the engine after I got it back to the shop and pressure washed the engine a bit
to where I could see more of the engine.

Above the Starter:
00N 2 CL28 2

Next to oil dip stick:
378940

Get us a couple of pictures of the truck and engine. Welcome to the group. You might be looking to Pat66 who has some nice complete examples of our trucks.

The L282 should stand for the casting date.
L = December
28 = 28th
2 = year (in this case 1962) which makes sense for a 1963 engine.

Here are some casting codes on L6 engines I have/had. Looks like my 1963 230ci was cast only 33 days after yours.

A 292 has features that set it apart from the 230ci and 250 ci.

Is it possible the number you gave "378940" is actually "3789404"? If so, it shows up as a 1963-1965 292 block (Mark Allen's Casting Numbers Book).

there could be a number 4 after the last digit its hard to read the casting is rough on this engine.

Look at Lugnutz pictures. If the lifter covers on the side of the engine are maybe 5 inches tall it will be a 292. that engine is taller that a 230/250. Some how I doubt that a c60 truck would have a 230 or a 250 engine in it. Good luck.

I should have posted a picture of the engine I don't know why I didnt before, but based on your pictures and info from the other post its a 292.


I got the truck from my neighbor only a few months ago, they had it sitting up in a barn for the last 4 years.
I have been working on it to use as a farm truck for basic road repairs and such.

I have replaced all the fuel lines and vacuum lines as well as all the brake lines and master cylinder and brake booster.
I also changed oil and such and re did the radiator,

Everything had been running great until it broke the cylinder so this is where I am now.

Here are some pictures of the whole motor.
