I have a leak where the drive shaft attaches to the rear differential. Unhooked the drive shaft and exposed a bolt with a large nut on it. It also has a cotter pin through the nut and bolt, which i have been able to remove. I can't get the nut to loosen at all. I went and bought a socket to fit, but is too wide to fit in the space. I end up turing the wheels instead of loosing the nut. Am i doing this wrong?

That nut requires several hundred pounds of torque to tighten, so will be hard to remove. I use a 48” pipe wrench across the U-joint to remove and tighten, so grind on your socket to fit properly to prevent an accident. Get a proper wrench to remove.

Doesn't take much time to make a jig to hold the yoke with a few feet of flatbar. Just need two holes drilled the same distance as the u joint strap holes, rest end of the jig on the floor. Makes the process a bit easier and safer.

If you know someone with an air impact or the big milwaukee electric impact, it will be a lot easier to remove

It might come off with a big hammer from the rear. If not you will need a puller.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Do you know where I could get one of the pinion nuts?
I have a 1949 GMC 3/4 ton.
