Hi Everyone,
Lately i've been having generator problems. The original one started making the sound of a rattle can (spray can). I took it apart to find a nice groove in the armature shaft about 1/16-1/8th of an inch deep. :o

I located a replacement generator in unkown condition, I cleaned it inside + out, and installed a new set of brushes, then installed it. I then fired up the engine with a loud noise best described as a power steering pump when it's getting ready to go out. :o I tore it back apart to find the rear brass bushing to be worn, and causing the armature to rub on one of the magnets.

How do you get out the old brass bushing to replace it with a new one? Also how do you pull off a stubborn generator fan/pully off of the armature shaft?

Right now so my truck is moveable, I installed a new bearing in the front, and cleaned the magnets, armature, and where the brushes contact the armature. Boy does that cleaning make a diference. It makes the stock headlights seam like they're halogens off of a new car. lol

Bend a small screwdriver end 90 degree. Hook it behind the bronze bushing and work it like a slide hammer.
other method

small round file and start filing till you have a cut through the bronze and than hook under bushing and pull out.

last resource

use a drill just a bit smalere than out side of bushing and drill out. Remaining bushing will come out easy.

Have used a hammer and chisel to cut thin bushings to the point I could fold it in with the chisel. On some thick bushings come out like crankshaft pilot bushings, find a piece of round stock (like a cut off bolt) that fits snugly into the bushing, Pack the bushing full of grease and tap the cut off bolt into the hole in the bushing. Let the hydraulic pressure of the grease push it out.

Hi Guys,
I used a small chisel(sp) + hammer, and got the old brass bushing out. I then used a small "c" clamp to press the new one in. After I got it installed back on the engine, I fired it up. She's quite now, and is charging perfectly!
