Hi there. My 1974 350V8 is missing an air cleaner, the hose from the crankcase cover vent to the air cleaner, and it has what appears to be a vacuum hose blocked with a screw on the QuadraJet.
Any suggestions on budget minded replacement parts?
Do I need to reconnect that vacuum line on the carb? I still have the original distributor with points.
Looks like my carb could be missing a linkage from the numbered arm from the choke and the round diaphragm located on both sides of the plugged vacuum hose?
Truck runs, but rough. Any tips greatly appreciated.
I took a picture of what appears to be the temp sensor. Am I missing a part necessary to connect this to my future wiring harness purchase?
Someone has eliminated the whole choke system, including the thermal coil that's supposed to bolt to the flat spot on the intake just below the carburetor. You would need to replace several parts, including the linkage between the choke pull-off and the fast idle cam to make the automatic choke work properly, before reconnecting the vacuum line. People who don't understand (and don't want to) how an auto choke works take the Mr. Bad Wrench approach and just disable everything.
The temp sensor above the thermostat was used to control a vacuum-operated heat riser valve and other accessories on emission-control engines from the mid-1970's and later. Unless you're trying to conform to some sort of original wiring diagram for a smog inspection, just ignore that sensor. The normal temp gauge sensor should be installed on the driver's side cylinder head between the #1 and #3 spark plugs. Jerry

Guys I’m no mechanic but that hose on the valve cover that it looks like paper stuffed in it is a Positive Crankcase Valve. It was designed to take unturned gas out of the crankcase and recycle it through the carb. Some after market air cleaners have an outlet on them for that. The distributor has a vacuum advance. The more gas you give the are plates with springs that spin out and advance timing so the vacuum advance on the distributor to the carb. Pertronix makes an electronic pickup to do away with points. Looking at that carb looks like it needs a rebuild or replacement. Again, I’m not a mechanic but to me these need attention to make the engine right.
