I have been working on a 1952 Chevrolet 3100 (1300 up here) for the past 8 years and almost completed. My setup is a 496 Big Block, 4 link rear, IFS using the Danforth crossmember. I am hoping to pick some brains regarding the use of the crossmember, specifically the shock coil combination and/or coil over combination. My current set up is: adj upper control arm from SPC, 2” drop spindles, stock lower control arms. (from a S10) . I have had a hard time finding a shock/coilover combination that will work as the spacing between the upper perch and the LCA is fairly short. I am curious if anyone else has had these issues with the crossmember. Any input is greatly appreciated. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,747 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,747 | There are some very fundamental geometry differences between upper and lower control arm setups and coilover suspension. Why not buy something that's designed to work with coilovers instead of trying to force a square peg into a round hole? Won't a front end that weighs as much as that big block setup require a massively heavy coilover system? I'm building a Can-Am style 2-wheel front end for my Honda Gold Wing that I intend to use with coilovers, but the whole front suspension, wheels, tires, and brakes will probably weight less than 400 pounds. I wanted some adjustability in the ride height and control, so I got a pair of QA! that are meant for G body style setup (stud up top, T bar down low). I wish I could go back 8 years and just buy a crossmember with coil overs, but I'm at a point where this ain't coming out, truck is all together. My issue with the Dnforth crossmember seems to be the limited space between the perch and LCA. I have a hard time believing no one has used this crossmember without success. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,747 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,747 | A torch, a welder, and some steel plate can make that upper mount position any height you want. That's how Danforth did it. I was just given a complete IFS crossmember salvaged from a butchered-up stovebolt frame, and a set of S-10 lower control arms that I'm going to modify to suit my needs. It will be going into an Excalibur kit car powered by a hotrodded Chevy 230 6 cylinder. I'm also building a Can-Am style 2 wheel IFS for a Honda Gold Wing from GEO Metro parts. Jerry
