My new project, 1952 3100 Suburban. I read an older thread & it confused me? (Bumpers) I would guess that the front bumper & brackets are same as PU bumpers/brackets? Are the rear bumpers same as front bumpers? Are the rear bumper brackets same as PU truck rear brackets?
Also, are the running boards & brackets the same as on long or short bed truck?

Car chat means talks about Chevy's. All other car makers only build transportation.

Darrell,

The bumpers on the Suburban, front and rear, are the same (same also as the front of a pickup). The front and rear brackets, however, are different, and I'm pretty sure (someone will confirm this) that the rear brackets of the Suburban are NOT the same as the rear brackets of the pickup.

The running boards are the same as those on a 3100 (1/2 ton) pickup.

Be careful of aftermarket bumpers (see my recent post).

I will add one thing, the original Suburban rear bumper was made of a thicker gauge steel than the front or reproduction stuff. Noticeably thicker.

Can you find that listed as being different in a Master Parts Catalog?
Thanks

I can confirm MNSmith's assertions that:
1) Suburban front and rear bumpers are interchangeable - with a slight exception: Original Suburban rear bumpers were heavier gauge steel than front bumpers - 1/4" vs 3/16". Doesn't matter unless you're doing a points restoration.
2) Pickup front bumpers will fit front and rear on a Suburban. The REAR BRACKETS however, will not interchange.
3) 1/2-ton Suburban rear bumper brackets are completely unique; pickup rear brackets won't work on a Sub, nor will 1-ton Sub rear brackets fit on a 1/2-ton Sub. It cost me $125 to learn that last one blush

“Original Suburban rear bumpers were heavier gauge steel than front bumpers - 1/4" vs 3/16".”

I believe/trust you, but, as someone (RR) once wisely stated “trust, but verify”.

Where would we find verification - what GM/Chevrolet truck document?
My 1954 Suburban had no rear bumper when I bought it 40 years ago.

Thanks, Tim

It looks like the one ton Panel had a different rear bumper?

The 1/2 ton Panel used the same bumpers (the same bumper on front and rear) as used on the Suburban.

My 51 suburban front and rear bumpers were identical and same as 1/2 ton pickup bumpers. Since they were in rough condition I replaced them with a set of 1 ton panel bumpers, which as mentioned above are considerably thicker but otherwise same size and curvature as the 1/2 ton bumpers.

What's important is the fact that it fits and that you have managed to replace it.
