I have a 1956 Belair 6 cylinder with an original type points and coil distributor. On my starter there is a solenoid attached to the top. It has an "R" terminal. Should there be a connection to that terminal? attaches to where?

Yes, if you are running points style ign. & 12 volts you need a wire on that term. to go to the pos. side of the coil. It will bypass the resistor when the starter is engauged to supply full available voltage to the coil.

I'm going to guess there's ig-1 and ign-2 on the back of ignition switch on a 56 Bel Air. One wired to the resistor and the other wired direct to the + on the coil. So the R terminal would not be used on a 56 Bel Air. Or you could wire it like Wrenchbender Ret. said.

The reason that I'm asking again is because I have conflicting information. Some guys say yes and some say no. From a guy on the Tri-Five Forum he said the following --- The R terminal provides a full 12V to the ignition coil during cranking, bypassing the ballast resistor.

On 55-56 cars, this function is handled by the ignition switch, and if you have an R terminal, it is not needed. From other sources, I understand that this arrangement changed in 1957 on Chevys. But for my 56 Belair it is not needed.

To clarify this post you are working on a 1956 Chevy car not a car engine in a truck, correct?

The engine is from a 1959 Chevy Apache pickup. It is a GM 6 cylinder 250 ci. I put it in a 56 Chevy car. So it's a truck motor in a car.

He is right. After looking at a diagram I see the 56 cas is bypassed through the ign. switch.
