drives great once going. no pinging.i set timing by turning distributor till idles the fastest,then retard it a bit.my old timing light was destroyed in my shop fire in 2013. rebuilt the carb,set air screw. .what do you think?

Often that can be caused by a too lean condition and that would be supported by the need to give it more gas. As for the Pertronix, I'm not a fan of those, but we'll ignore that for now.
Carburetor? Rochester B? Have you checked for intake vacuum leaks? Maybe at the carburetor to manifold? That will cause a "too lean" condition.

When I rebuilt my carb, there was some hard light coloured residue restricting the jet. It needed to be removed with a welding tip cleaner as solvent and compressed air didn't remove it. The 0.057 jet was effectively reduced to probably less than 0.050. It caused a lean condition.

| | | | | Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 2,766 Carburetion specialist | | Carburetion specialist Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 2,766 | (1) TEST the accelerator pump to see if it is functioning. Leather pumps are impervious to ethanol, neoprene pumps are NOT. If it is not functional, replace with leather.
(2) Upgrade the ignition to points/condenser.
(3) Set the dwell with a dwell meter
(4) Reset the timing using a timing light. If you don't have one, a guaranteed 50 year-old one from Ebay (opinion) is superior to the current versions made in someplace I cannot read the name.

Be sure you're comparing apples to apples. I really like the dial-back feature on timing advance to check centrifugal and vacuum at cruise speed, and plotting the advance curve by carefully increasing the speed a few hundred RPM at a time.
