After getting my 1957 235 head back from the machine shop I sprayed on Eastman paint prep to get the, what I thought was an, oil film off before painting. The more I sprayed and brushed the more metal colored stuff kept coming off. After spaying two cans of the acetone I'm getting close to it being clean. I'm very new to this, my first head from a machine shop, so I'm wondering if this is some kind of clear coat or cast iron colored paint on it. I'm now hoping I didn't screw this up.
Anyone know what's this is about, or words of wisdom?
thanks,
Paul

I would have called the machine shop before I started removing any coating.

Unfortunately I didn't know there was any coating on it except oil film before I hosed it down with acetone.

Best advice is to call them and ask secret what they used. There is no way we could guess ohwell what another person does.

I would say they painted it with cast iron gray enamel, as long as you have it stripped and the remaining is not lifting from the iron you should be fine just hitting it again with the engine paint of your choice.

Lots of machine shops use this stuff:

https://goodson.com/products/lb-1-cast-iron-spray-paint

It's a quick drying flat finish paint that looks like cast iron and keeps reconditioned heads, blocks, and such from rusting in storage. You can paint over it with any good quality high temp engine enamel.
