Working on a 38 1-1/2 ton project. Trying to remove the transmission. I have a shop manual ordered. Can’t seem to figure out how to get the torque tube slid back far enough to access the u joint. I’m sure that it is covered in the manual. The torque tube will only slide back to where my finger is pointing in the pic. Thanks guys for any direction that you can point me to.
Smokeman Unscrew your knurled nut there try to save that cork gasket. Move your ball socket back, unbolt u-joint slide back,then put a 2x4 up in the frame block torque-tube up so you can pull trans,with it blocked-up can still roll the truck...be sure and chock it so it can't roll away !! Hope that helps ,been a while.

Use a piece of emery cloth to "shoeshine" the tube for several inches. Even a little rust or dirt will make it very difficult if not Impossible to slide the ball back on the tube. Removing that grease fitting will allow the tube to slide back several inches if everything else is slicked up. Definitely unscrew the nut and try to avoid damaging the seal ring under it. A little oil on the tube helps, also. Jerry

Thanks guys for the replies. After looking at the link to the manual that Wayne67vert posted, it looks like I will have to split the torque tube in the middle of the shaft u joint then pull it from the transmission. They must have made the 1-1/2 tons different as I do not have a nut or a knurled nut to remove on mine. I have two u joint balls on the torque tube.
