I have a 3 speed trans and a 216 cu engine in my 1950 Chevy 3100. For as long as I can remember I have had to double clutch when going from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd. If I double clutch I can easily transition from gear to gear without grinding gears like I was just learning to drive. I learned to drive in this truck in 1977, and at that time shifting from gear to gear was seamless. I don't have any desire to go away from the 3 speed, so what are my options?

Adjust the clutch so the synchronizers can do their job properly. The clutch disc should be released completely from the flywheel during shifts. If a clutch adjustment doesn't help, you've got a worn out synchronizer and/or bearings in the transmission.

Or you're using the wrong gear lube in the transmission...

I used to double clutch my 4-speed to prevent grinding. After years of that, I found that holding the clutch pedal down once and just pausing midway through the shift (is there a detent?) stopped the grinding. My left knee is going to last twice as long as it would have.

Pausing in neutral works on upshifts- - - -downshifts still require speed-matching the gears, with or without the clutch.
