Hi all. Been running though the forums to try get an engine identification from the serial number on my block. Mine look unlike anything I've seen so far. Serial number is 1744C. Picture attached for authentication. I've run into Canadian truck oddities before like trying to find a Chevy 1300 hood emblem when all you can find is the US 3100 emblem. Is there a resource of Canadian serial numbers to reference somewhere? Still looking, but if someone can help, would be appreciated!
The serial number on my block is like that; a mystery number that doesn't seem to make any sense. PO told me that the original engine was replaced with a new one bought from the GM dealer. He also told me that it was a 261. From the block casting number I can see that the engine is a late 235. It does have some 261 parts such as the carb and thermostat. Probably 261 distributor, too.
So, I suggest that you use the casting numbers to see what you have.
As for the Canadian hood emblem, I don't think there is anyone reproducing them as the market is too small. On my hood, the emblems are missing and the holes are filled in.
Thanks Gord&Fran! I did search the casting numbers and the head and block check out as 1955 235. Was taken from my grandfathers 1952 grain truck, so was definitely not the original engine. It's going into my '52 half ton now.
Thankfully my 1300 hood emblems are still passible.
