My front axle has roller bearings and the service manual calls for soft, low melt point grease. That was 65 years ago and grease technology has improved. Any suggestions on what I should use?

My Low Cab Forward also has factory roller bearings, I totally cleaned the old grease out of them and re-packed with modern disc brake wheel bearing grease and new seals, no issues at this point and I use the truck.

I use modern disc brake wheel bearing grease as well.

Isn't it a hoot going into a parts store knowing the item exists or at least did exist at some point in time, but being told it doesn't or never did. So glad the parts store I use has staff that have been in the business long enough to know what they're talking about, AND still use the old books if the computer won't provide the correct information.

My local NAPA has a couple old timers that know a lot about the old vehicles, both retired mechanics. O'Riley's and AutoZone are a joke. When I was in high school I worked part time at a family owned parts store. It was the local hangout for mechanics. The counter had half a dozen stools, always had a pot of coffee on and anybody was welcome to sit around and chew the fat. Those days are long gone.

Paul WNC In the olden days if modern grease got mixed with old grease it would turn to soap, kinda like what grandma made ,lye soap highly unlubricating ! Well before our time !!

Chevies till I d Our local FLAPS is still pretty down home,they are willing to chase stuff for you and if they can't find it ,your'e in for a battle. However they don't have much control on quality !Have 3 places.

Just get a can of THIS and you'll be good to go.

The lubricant in all types of grease is plain old oil. The thickener used to make it stay put in whatever application where it's used is called "soap". The difference in various types of grease is the thickness and the melting point of the soap. General purpose chassis grease has a thin, low melting point soap that's not suitable for applications where high temperatures might be encountered. Older styles of wheel bearing grease had a medium-temperature soap that could handle the temperature rise of a drum brake system. Since disc brakes run at noticeably higher temps than drums, bearing grease suitable for disc brake applications must have a higher melt point, hence the "DB" rating. DB grease is overkill for the older drum brake hubs, but there's no problem with using it there.
