I started using Rislone in my fj60 about 7 years ago right after rebuilt engine with new cam. In many ways the Yota 4.2l is a clear knockoff of the Gm stovebolt. The 60 has a catalytic converter so I’m a little conservative and use about 1/6 bottle of Rislone zinc each oil change with Mobile-1 15W-50. So far so good. It’s been my daily driver and got about 80k since rebuild. Still runs great so I suspect cam is healthy.
Right now I’m adding a full bottle of Rislone per oil change with conventional oil as I’m breaking in my recently rebuilt 216. After break in I plan to switch to Mobile 1 with maybe a half bottle of Rislone. As I recall back when I did research on all of this I learned Mobil-1 15w-50 has a decent zinc content level.
I’m relatively new to these old beasts so my ideas might not be the best. Maybe some of the veterans will chime in...
It certainly won't hurt but in a stock Chevy 6 under normal use it's completely unnecessary.

I thought all older engines should have zinc additives in the oil to help reduce lifter and cam wear. Am I mistaken? I have a 1963 230ci with hydraulic lifters.
We've had lots of discussions on the subject. Search for "zinc" or "ZDDP" and you'll get lots of reading. They pretty much all come to the conclusion that unless you have stiff valve springs and/or a high lift cam and are working the engine hard for extended periods it's not necessary. Modern oils are adequate. If you're breaking in a new camshaft that can be a horse of a different color. In that case follow the manufacturer's recommendations. I've got LOTS of miles on old Chevy sixes and have never added a drop of extra zinc.

I've been running Valvoline diesel oil in my '46 for 35 years without an issue or any additives. Actually has a full pressure '54 235 in it. Started with straight w30, but that got hard to find so I've switched to 15w-40. Engine has about 85,000 miles on it since rebuild back in '86 and doesn't smoke at all. The diesel oil has a bit of the additives that you don't get in gas engine motor oils.
Lugnutz I don't think your wasting energy on the ZDDP,remember EOS, you got from chevy ?? They told you to use it on a new cam !! The Chevy haters said oh soft cams in those sixties engines !! Well if you wont follow there guide lines what can you expect !! Always used EOS (engine oil supplement) have a 30/30 in 327 that is 50 years old still gets it !
David Bush I agree with all you said but here in central il. when it gets really cold 15/40 is pretty heavy to crank outdoor engines. Mostly use 5w30 with ZDDP, now in georgia it would work better. That big truck oil would be used in engines with block heaters, that is what my trucker neighbors do all winter.
52 Beastie Have a 51 235 in a 51 6400 ,rolled in a set of minus .002 bearings had the pan off twice carefully cleaned each time, now have agood daily that needs a quart in 6 months give it 2 oz. ZDDP each quart. Seems like it is pretty happy. does good at about 48 MPH up to 53 or 54 ,much more and your hammering it !!
VR-1 has zinc added and is still available in 30 weight. Also VR-1 is available nearly everywhere.
That's what I use.
