I have a pretty good leak in the old RTV in the rear diff cover. I am thinking about painting the rear end while I have the cover off, and possibly getting a new diff cover. Can anyone help me identify the rear end. I think it is stock, but I am not sure if they had a drain plug in the bottom like this one or maybe it was added by someone along the line. Kind of hard to see the drain plug I am talking about in the pics. Just not sure what to search to find a cover that will fit. Thank you.
Why are you getting another cover? You mean a new gasket for the cover? Is the plug at the bottom and requires a hex wrench? I put a hex drain plug at the bottom of mine and love it.

Was just thinking about it. Not sold on getting a cover for sure though. Yea it’s a hex drain on the underside. I have the shop manual and it looks stock but I don’t see that drain plug in any of the pics from the manual so I wasn’t sure. Is there a specific name for this diff to find out more info. Probably a stupid question, but I have only really worked newer vehicles before this truck.
I believe that if you remove the bottom bolt of the cover the gear lube will drain out. Just remember to put some sealant on the threads of that bolt when you reinstall the cover.
Hey guys, thank you for the responses. I think what I am trying to ask is if this is the stock '58 rear end? Also, is there a way to identify it when I am searching online for parts? For example if I am searching for a cover for a 8.2 GM 10 bolt I will get exactly that, or a Ford 9. But I am not sure what to type in when looking for this rear end.
I just did my ‘52 3100 with the stock torque tube,. It looks just like yours, and I just loosened the bolts and pried the cover back on the bottom to let it drain. I reinstalled with a new gasket and used anti-seeze on the cover bolts. No leaks.

If you do infact have a drain plug at the bottom of the diff, be sure to think about the plug when you use a floorjack on the diff. Later today I will show a pic of what I use along with the floor jack when it comes jacking up the backside.
