| | | | Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 53 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 53 | I have a 1950 3100 with a 216. I have neveer had the engine running, but I am near that point finally. I have a Carter 730S carb that came on the engine when I bought the truck. It has a couple of holes in the base that are opposite to the slots in the carb insulator underneath. What do these holes do and by putting a gasket in between the carb and insulator that will open them up to "breathe"?

Without pulling a carb to look at the passages, GUESSING one is for the vacuum power circuit, and the other is for the automatic choke.
When changing to any carburetor other than the original, one should ALWAYS use the mounting gasket supplied by the manufacturer of the carburetor in question.
I looked up the one for the 730s; it is Carter part number 1A-41.
