I have a 53 chevy 3600 3/4 ton. I am thinking about putting an S10 T5 transmission in my truck. I have 1954 235 in the truck now that the T5 would mount to. Will the S10 tranny mount up to the bell housing. Or would I need a mounting plate of some sort. Lots of questions.
Thanks
Elmo

I can’t claim to be brilliant.
I’d be happy to help get you on the right track with your T5 installation. There are so many ways to go about it.
If your S10 T5 has a Muncie bolt pattern (1983-93 S10) then your going to find the installation very straight forward. If you intend to keep a working cable style speedometer, then you might have to swap tail housings if your T5 has a VSS style speedo output.

Anyway, here’s how I installed my T5 in my 1965 C10. Your installation will be VERY similar. You will notice that my T5 has 26 shaft splines and a 26 spline clutch disc because I custom built my T5 using S10 parts and V8 Camaro gears. Your T5 will have 14 splines and I’d strongly encourage you to do a Jeep shaft swap to convert it to 10 splines.

Here’s a link to see my installation. https://lugnutz65chevystepside.weeb...stallation-from-engine-to-rear-axle.html

See? Brilliant!

By the way Lugnutz, I’ve bookmarked your page for when I do my T5 conversion!

Mine is a T5 originally from an Astro Van with the VSS speedometer output. It is attached to a 1959 235 and from there it goes to a 1969 Chevy pickup rear end. I'll be happy to share all the things I learned doing the swap.

Elmo, Lugnutz is the Man on how to make your conversion. He and his site were my goto when converting my '51, 3600 to T5 sweetness.

My approach was no spacer. Shorten the input shaft to match the original SM420 shaft length. Same with the input shaft housing. Use a Dewalt angle grinder to lengthen the clutch splines in the input shaft. Then I took the input shaft to the bench grinder and removed input shaft material on the transmission side of the shaft until the clutch had sufficient travel to work without binding. I know this sounds like a recipe for input shaft failure, but keep in mind we're dealing with a less than 100 hp stock 216 engine (in my truck anyway).

The above said, if I ever do another I Will use the Jeep input shaft. It's the easy button. No adapter required and everything works easypeasy.

Also, on a do-over I would Not use a transmission crossmember.

Clutch disk. I'm using a '88 Astrovan 4.3 clutch from Rock Auto, here.. It actually measures 10.75". Stock pressure plate works fine .

New throwout bearing.

Drilled out tanny case mounting holes to .5", used stock bolts in top holes and two new bottom bolts 2" long.

That's pretty much my story. The original thread is here..

9 years, 15,000 miles and still happy with the conversion. I did swap T5's to get a better transmission with a .72 5th gear.

Good Luck,
