And i noticed next to the driveshaft yoke on the rearend is a (for lack of words)a metal unit. It said, Eaton 12v. Is this a two speed rearend. If so how hard is it to hook up.

My 44 has a 52 rear 2-speed, but it's vacuum shift, so it was pretty obvious, big round vacuum diaphram on a sqaure box in front of the differential... I've got pics of mine if it would help... It is one of the later-model units that shifts with an electric motor rather than vacuum. They're not as smooth as the vacuum-shift types, but they're a little more reliable. You'll need a 2-position switch on the shift handle that swaps the hot and ground to the motor, and some wiring back to the rear end. I think I've got a wiring diagram in one of my truck manuals at the farm. Drop me an email when I get back there this weekend, and I'll scan you a copy.

| | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,214 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,214 | If you find a truck that had an Eaton 2-speed electric shift, don't forget to get the speedometer reduction adaptor. It's a little round unit that screws inline with the cable on the back of the speedometer. It will have one electric terminal that gets 12v when you shift to High Gear this will keep your speedometer/odometer calibrated regardless of range. All Eaton 2-speed rears have the same reduction multiplier (1.36), so any truck with one will work. The High ratio will be stamped on the front of your rear. Multiply that number to find the low ratio (ie. 6.14 high has a 8.35 low).
