An addition to my fuel pump saga. Got the rebuild kit in and installed it. Leaks worse than before so there's something going on that I can't see. Appears to be around the diaphragm mounting flange. I determined that's a project for another day. After extensive searching I discovered no one is making the OEM pump any longer. I found the Airtex 4149 which is "supposed" to be a straight across swap. Nope. The mounting flange is much thicker and the fuel ports are over an inch higher. That may not bother some but the inlet line wouldn't reach the port because the draft tube is in the way. I discovered that nearly all of the vendors are showing a picture of the ACDelco 4149 which is the stock pump but they are selling something else. I finally found another Airtex pump (don't remember the number, I'll have to go out to the shop to get it) that is close to a direct swap. The mounting flange is correct and the ports are only about 3/4" off which I can make work. Got it swapped in and the engine won't even try to fire. Gas to the carb but nothing. Before packing 10 pounds of C4 under the hood and lighting it off, I took a break to cool down and started inspecting everything. It ran perfectly before swapping out the fuel pump which was leaking. I finally discovered the black wire from the coil to the side of the distributor had broken but was still close enough to it's attach point that it wasn't obvious. A new split terminal and bingo, it fired right up. I never feed my Gremlins after midnight so I wonder why they have it in for me.
