just bought a 54 chevy 3100, trying to identify the engine made year. the serial number is T716A (Tonawanda, Juy 16th, 235) correct me if i'm wrong. also there casting number behind the starter is CONV1 G1157. does this mean it's a 1957 engine???

That serial number threw me for a loop until I finally found a note about a change in engine ID in 1957 at the very bottom of the list on this web site:http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/models/engine.htm#57eng

I'm not certain about the date code as they usually only have three numerals (day and year) after the letter (month). But, it seems that the perhaps the date code system changed in 1957 as well. I tend to agree with you that your engine is from 1957. The date code (to me) would suggest July (G) 11th, 1957.

yeah i found the same info, so i think the block was casted july 11th and maybe built july 16 1957 as the serial number indicates??? and it is a 235 right

A stamped Engine Serial Number that does not match the Block Date Casting Code is an indication that the engine might be a replacement engine - the earlier Engine Serial Number was stamped on the the later engine/block when it was installed in 1957 (or later) as a replacement engine. This is a relatively common occurrence, especially in states that used the Engine Serial Number for registration/title.

ok thanks, but in my case the block casting code date is 5 days before the stamped serial number...
